Nuakhai is an agricultural festival mainly observed by people of Western Orissa or (Kosal), particularly Sambalpuri cultural areaNuakhai is observed welcoming the new rice-paddy of the season.According to Hindu calendar it is observed on panchami tithi (fifth day) of lunar fortnight of Bhadrava (August-September), the day after Ganesh chaturthi.In Bangalore also residents of Western Orissa have been rejoicing Nuakhai for the past few decades.Nuakhai is really an occasion which strongly approves and endorses the patrilineal nature of the Sambalpuri Cultural society It is an event when one finds filial affection and unity of the family when all from the patrilineal side participate in the festivity.Here the attached image is the Nuakhai Bhet 2009 which has been celebrated in Bangalore.
The Jagannath Temple
The Jagannath temple in Puri was built approximately 12th Century AD by King Chodaganga of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. The completion was later brought about by his descendant, Anangabhima Deva, during the 12th century.
Ram Mandir
Ram Mandir, in the heart of Bhubaneswar, is a temple housing beautiful images of Lord Ram, Lord Lakshman, and Goddess Sita. The high rising spire of the main temple visible from many parts of the capital city, is its main attraction. Built and managed by a private trust, the temple complex also comprises shrines devoted to ochre-painted marble idols of Lord Hanuman, Lord Shiva and other gods. The National Highway 5 passes through this city. Biju Patnaik Airport is 3 km from the city center.
Koilighugar Waterfall
The Koilighugar Waterfall, around 200 ft in height, is in the Lakhanpur, near the village Kushmelbahal. The waterfall is in a rivulet named Ahiraj which originates from the `Chhuikhanch` forest. After the fall the rivulet flows west wards to merge into the Mahanadi river. It is a picturesque beauty spot with its sylvan back drop.
Rathayatra
Ratha Yatra, the Festival of Chariots of Lord Jagannatha is celebrated every year at Puri, the temple town in Orissa, on the east coast of India. The presiding deities of the main temple, Sri Mandira, Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, with the celestial wheel Sudarshana are taken out from the temple precincts in an elaborate ritual procession to their respective chariots. The huge, colourfully decorated chariots are drawn by hundreds and thousands of devotees on the bada danda, the grand avenue to the Gundicha temple, some two miles away to the North. After a stay for seven days, the deities return to their abode in Srimandira.
Lingaraj Temple
Lingaraj Temple is a temple of the Hindu god Shiva and is one of the oldest temples of the Temple City Bhubaneswar, a revered pilgrimage center and the capital of the state of Orissa.
The temple of Lingaraja, the biggest of all at Bhubaneswar is located within a spacious compound wall of latterite measuring 520 feet by 465 feet. The wall is 7 feet 6 inches thick and surmounted by a plain slant coping.
Ghatagaon Tarini
Maa Tarini is one of the embodiments of Shakti and is the chief presiding Goddess in Oriya culture. Her chief shrine is in Ghatagaon, Keonjhar District, Orissa.The origin of Shakti or worship of the Earth as a female embodiment of power is found across many cultures all over the world. In Orissa which has a high density of tribal population whose religious practices have been assimilated into the mainstream Hindu faith, the worship of natural formations such as rocks, tree trunks, rivers is widespread among the tribes.
Odagaon
Located at 5 km from Sarankul, Odagaon is a much visited pilgrim center in Nayagarh. The temple dedicated to Lord Raghunath and a pond are the main attractions in this place. The Ramlila festival organised here amidst much splendor and merriment draws a large crowd from far and near.
This is the holy place of LORD RAGHUNATH,known as DITIYA SRIKSHETRA(2nd to SRIKSHETRA,JAGANNATH DHAM PURI). It is the Asram of Maharshi ATRIMUNI.
Bhitarkanika
Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most renowned sanctuaries in Orissa. Popular for its crocodiles and turtles, the sanctuary is spread over 650 sq kms and was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1975. Converted into a national park in 1998, to preserve the turtles; the sanctuary has a thick mangrove forest which is home to a number of endangered and migratory birds.
Apart from reptiles, different types of mammals, birds, amphibians and fish are also found here. Out of 58 species of mangroves in India, 55 are available in Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary.
