Bhubaneswar, Feb. 7: Hours after security forces demolished Maoist training camps in Nawagaon in Sundargarh district yesterday, the rebels struck back today, killing a railway supervisor on the NH-23 near Chandiposh in the same district.
Sukru Oram (45) was abducted from his house at Kumakela village in the district last night while he was busy at his sister’s wedding ceremony. His body was found from Champajharan area — more than 400km from here — this morning.
“Maoists have killed Oram after kidnapping him,” Banai sub-divisional police officer Sudarshan Sethy said. The rebels also left posters, branding him “police informer”.
Angry villagers also blocked the highway and demanded immediate compensation for Oram’s family. They also demanded security for the villagers. The blockade was lifted around 3pm after assurances from the authorities concerned.
A joint team of Orissa and Jharkhand police destroyed two Maoist camps set up in Saranda forests near Nawagaon bordering Jharkhand yesterday afternoon. The rebels had reportedly triggered eight landmine explosions before escaping into the forest. While six landmines were defused, a huge cache of arms and explosives left behind by the Naxalite were recovered from the camps in the evening.
Security personnel in the state are also on high alert during the three-day Maoist bandh that began today. The banned outfit called the bandh in four states — Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa and Bengal — to protest the proposed offensive against them.
There have been reports of combing operations in Cuttack’s Narsinghpur forest, around 120km from Bhubaneswar.
